Monkey Bread Recipe Dutch Oven

We love to cook and bake outdoors, especially in our dutch ovens. On a recent camping trip, we baked a batch of Monkey Bread in the dutch oven for our brunch. They were so easy to make and turned out so yummy! This dutch oven Monkey Bread recipe is a great one to make with kids since they can help roll the dough balls and shake the bag of spices to coat the dough balls. Little A is only four years old and she had a blast helping to make the Monkey Bread! The weather is still pretty chilly around here since it is only early spring in Montana but that doesn’t stop us from going camping or baking in our dutch ovens! On our recent camping trip, we built a campfire first thing in the morning so we could sit nearby to stay warm as the sun rose and the day warmed up a bit. We used our campfire to heat up the charcoal briquettes and opened up one side of our campfire ring to place the coals and the dutch oven while it baked.

In case you’re new here, you might have missed our tips on how to bake off grid in a dutch oven, how we love to bake most of our Thanksgiving dinner outdoors in dutch ovens and even baked our pies in the dutch ovens outside when the temperature was in the 20’s outside! We have more dutch oven recipes we love to bake that we’ll be sharing on the blog over the next few months so stay tuned for more recipes.

Our Monkey Bread recipe uses all ingredients that are made from scratch. A lot of Monkey Bread recipes out there have you buy pre-made dough packed in cans at the grocery store (and they’re also packed with lots of icky ingredients and preservatives!)

Dutch Oven Madness!: Meatball Monkey Bread

We prefer to make our food from scratch so this recipe uses homemade dough. This dough is super easy to make and is actually the dough we also use for making homemade pizza. Since our homemade dough recipe makes a large batch, we had enough dough to bake our Monkey Bread, a big dough ball to take on our camping trip to make dutch oven pizza (recipe coming soon!) and one big dough ball to stick in the freezer at home for a future meal. Here’s our recipe for making the homemade dough.

1. Pour the cinnamon, sugar and brown sugar into a gallon size plastic bag. We like to use a zip top bag to get a good seal on top before shaking so we don’t end up with a big mess.

2. Tear the dough apart and roll into small balls about 1″ in size. Place the dough balls inside the plastic bag.

5. Remove the sugary dough balls from the plastic bag and spread them out on the bottom of the parchment paper lined dutch oven.

7. Cover the dutch oven and bake about 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Rotate the dutch oven about half way through the baking to ensure even baking.

8. When they’re done, enjoy! We even had some left over that we ate a few hours later for an afternoon snack and they still tasted delicious.

When you are making easy camping meals on your trips, it’s nice to do a little prep work at home. For this monkey bread, you can measure and mix the dry ingredients at home which will make campsite prep a breeze.

If you are making this as one of our easy campfire recipes, you’ll need about 25 coals, you can also use charcoal briquettes.

When you are making Dutch oven baked goods with coals, be sure to turn your oven and lid in opposite directions during the cooking process to ensure even baking.

If you want to make this as one of our camp stove recipes, you’ll also need to use a Dutch oven dome and heat diffuser plate to get the heat up the walls and over the top of the oven’s lid for baking.

Step 1. Prepare your ingredients, heat source and equipment as directed. I like using campfire coals when I’m making winter camping recipes and have a morning fire. Otherwise, prepare 25 charcoal briquettes for baking with a 12-inch Dutch oven.

Mix sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts in plastic bag. Tear or cut each biscuit into small pieces, then drop into bag, close tightly and shake to coat well.

Step 2. Preheat Dutch oven and melt butter. Place all coals under the oven for bottom heat, add 4 tbs butter to the pot and let it melt.

Step 3. Combine dough mixture with butter. Dump entire contents of bag into oven with butter, stir together and spread into a single layer in the bottom of the oven.

Camp Cooking Tip: I like the crispy crust that comes from baking the dough directly in the butter in the bottom of the cast iron Dutch oven but you could use parchment paper liners in the bottom of the oven for easier cleanup. We have an entire tutorial on how to use Dutch oven liners and make your own for pennies!

Step 4. Bake at 350 F. Arrange 8 bottom coals in a circle so there is no “center coal” because if there is a center coal, the middle bread pieces will burn. Cover with lid and add remaining 17 coals on top.

Camp Cooking Tip: Turn lid and bottom in opposite directions every 5 minutes to ensure even baking. Dough will be cooked through in about 15 minutes.

Step 6. Optional topping. You can drizzle a simple powdered sugar glaze over the top of the sweet Dutch oven pull apart bread by combining a little powdered sugar and milk.

One batch of monkey bread will feed 6 people. If you want to double this recipe, in addition to doubling the ingredient amounts, you’ll need to work in batches to shake and coat the biscuit bread dough pieces because they won’t all fit into the bag at one time.

You can still use a 12-inch Dutch oven but you won’t be able to get both rolls of Pillsbury biscuits in a single layer so the texture will be more chewy, less crispy. If you want a crispier texture, you’ll also need to increase the size of the oven or just make two separate batches.
