Best Naan Bread Recipe Yogurt

This easy homemade Naan Bread Recipe is perfectly soft, chewy, and pillowy, just like you get at your favorite Indian restaurant. No electric mixer required – just your hands, a bowl, and cast iron skillet. So delicious and completely irresistible!

Fresh homemade flatbread right off the griddle and slathered in garlic butter has got to be one of life’s best things. Or at least it is for me! My sister and I used to dine at a local Indian restaurant just for their naan, eating our weight in it, barely having room for anything else. I make naan bread at home now pretty regularly since it’s so easy and my kids absolutely love it, too.

Ingredient

Naan is a traditional Indian flatbread, which is soft and pillowy, full of neat little air pockets. Authentic naan is baked in a blazing-hot Tandoor clay oven, but you can get great results simply by using a hot cast iron skillet.

Classic Naan Bread Recipe

These are both classic Indian flatbreads, but their origins, ingredients, and cooking methods are different. Pita bread is from the Middle East and just includes flour, salt, yeast, and olive oil and forms one huge air pocket. Naan hails from India and includes yogurt and egg in the dough, which causes several little bubbles to form, making it nice and fluffy.

As mentioned above, traditional naan bread is made in a tandoor/clay oven. Not many people have one of those, though! Luckily, it’s super easy to make this flatbread recipe in a cast iron skillet (or on a griddle) while maintaining all the authentic ingredients. Here are some tips to get as close to the real deal as possible:

My Indian-inspired Naan recipe is also great because it’s very easy to make at home! You only need a few ingredients to make the naan dough, and the process of shaping the naan and cooking them is fun and simple to do.

It’s a great recipe to make with children, by the way! Kids love to work with bread dough, and this one is especially great because it’s cooked on the stovetop instead of in the oven. That way, they can see it cooking up right before their eyes.

At heart, Naan is a simple flatbread, similar to pita bread or even tortillas. It’s part of traditional Indian cuisine, and is usually made in a clay oven called a tandoor. The dough is kneaded, then shaped, and finally slapped onto the sides of the hot tandoor. They bake up crunchy on the bottom and bubbly on top. They are lightly browned, even charred, and utterly delicious!

Two Ingredient Dough Naan Flatbread

Pita bread is usually a very basic recipe using just flour, water, yeast, oil, and salt. But, Naan bread is enriched with yogurt, and sometimes butter and eggs. The result is flavorful and chewy, perfect for eating plain or with a savory entree.

So is naan healthy? Like most baked goods, it can be… or it can be kind of iffy, made with low-quality ingredients and lots of preservatives. AND, high carbs. 😬

This version, however, is definitely on the healthier side, thanks to the simple ingredients: sour cream and flour. That’s right! There’s no hydrogenated oil, sugar, or other questionable stuff in here. Just a simple and healthy side dish that everyone will want seconds of!

Easy Naan Bread

Making naan bread from scratch is SO simple. As it contains no yeast, it literally takes less than 10 minutes to make a batch!

In a large mixing bowl, you’ll want to combine your flour, salt (if using it) and Greek yogurt and mix until combined. If you like, use your hands to mix in the dough until fully incorporated. Form a big ball of dough.

Then, you’ll lightly flour a wooden or kitchen surface. Sprinkle a little extra flour on the ball of dough, and transfer onto the floured surface. Press the ball of dough into a circular shape and cut into 8 even pieces. Flatten each piece of dough, and form a rough, oblong shape.

Finally, you will heat a large non-stick pan on medium heat. When hot, place one piece of naan dough onto the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes, before flipping and cooking for another 2 minutes. Repeat until all the dough has been used up and 8 naan bread remains!

While Greek yogurt is the only kind of yogurt that works well (including vegan Greek yogurt) there IS another alternative for Greek yogurt that can be used.

Sour cream works in the same way Greek yogurt does, as it is thick and holds together. You can substitute the Greek yogurt with sour cream.
