Clay Flower Pot Bread Recipe

Terrain CafĂ© Serves bread in terra cotta flower pots. They sell it in kits and they also have one for a cinnamon swirl flower pot bread. I made my own version and it’s absolutely delicious! I bought small clay pots at a local nursery (see below how I prepared them to bake in) and used a simple recipe for cinnamon swirl bread that somehow tastes even better when it’s served in a flower pot! Enjoy!

Flowerpot

Make cinnamon swirl flower pot bread for a rustic gathering. They are easy to make, but of course like all bread…it takes time.

**Prepare your terra cotta pots by washing them and then coating the inside and outside with canola oil. Place them on a baking pan and bake in a 250Âş oven for 2 1/2 hours. Repeat this twice the first time you are using them to bake bread.

Once you’ve made the dough, add it to a bowl with a little canola oil and coat the dough on both sides. Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm spot in the house. Let rise for 2 – 1/2 hours.

Spread room temperature butter on the rolled out dough and cover with cinnamon or a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Then roll length wise.

Note: next time I will trim the ends when I roll out the dough so that the pieces are the same size.

Butter the inside of each flower pot with soft butter and place each piece, cinnamon swirl side up. Cover with a towel and let rise for an hour to 1 – 1/2 hours. Then bake in a 350Âş oven for 18 minutes.

There are many beautiful nurseries around the country and whenever I travel I make sure to seek them out. Even though I can’t bring home plants when traveling, there’s something about a visit to a nursery in any city that I love. Terrain is one of those places. It’s way more than a nursery, although you could do one stop shopping at Terrain for all your planting needs…there’s so much more than plants at Terrain, especially in the fall.

How To Make The Best Clay Flower Pot Herb Bread Recipe

Each year Terrain has a day full of activities to usher in the harvest season. This year in Westport, it’s tomorrow, October 5th. But don’t worry if you can’t make it, there will be plenty to see and experience all throughout the season. Since it’s only a few minutes from my house, I stop in frequently for a plant, a little gift or to meet a friend for a cortado in the cafĂ©.These Flower Pot bread loaves or bread rolls will certainly be a point of conversation and no doubt bring gasps of pleasure and admiration when you serve them! Moreover, they are so easy to make especially if you start your dough off in a bread machine. Bread was originally baked in terracotta or clay pots, so these are not so different from old fashioned bread made many years ago. You must make sure your flower pots are seasoned before you bake in them, but once they are seasoned they are ready to be used over and over again. I have added a list of suggested extras, and I always like to sprinkle mixed seeds on top of these - they almost look like seeds that have been sown in the flower pots! I have listed ingredients for basic white bread here, but you can add wholewheat, granary or rye flour if you would like a variation. I am sorry, but I have to say it, these flower pot loaves or rolls should turn out Blooming Marvellous! Had to be said! Have fun. NB: Strong white flour is the British culinary term for bread flour, flour that is used in breadmaking with a high gluten content. All purpose flour is NOT strong bread flour and will NOT give the desired results in this bread recipe. It NEVER crossed my mind that anyone would think that old flower pots are used in this recipe!! LOL! PLEASE use new plant pots and season them before baking the bread in them, as stated in the recipe..........I hope that helps those of you who may have been lost in translation!)

I am British (English-Scottish), but I was born in South Africa and have lived all over the world, including Hong Kong, Germany, Cyprus, USA & Singapore. I have also been very fortunate to have travelled extensively over the years.........I still have wanderlust!

I used to be an English Literature & Art History teacher & lecturer; before that, I trained and worked as a Graphic Designer for many years. I now live in France with my husband & my daughter who has just started university in September 2006. We also have one very chatty Burmese cat Willow, who allows us to live with her here! (I used to have three cats, I recently lost Monty, a beautiful seal point Siamese and before that, Rama, who was a debonair blue point Siamese cat - I would love to have another Siamese cat or cats in the future!)

This is my wonderful old boy, Rama, a blue-point Siamese, who died when he was 20yrs old - excuse the old and much sellotaped photo:

My favourite pastimes are: reading, writing, painting & drawing, photography, gardening, anything creative, walking, travelling, dining out and of course COOKING! I love all types of cuisine, but especially Traditional British - and NO it is NOT all bad!! I particularly love associated with the changing seasons plus traditional feasts & festivals, as well as Slow Cooking. I also enjoy French & North African cuisine, come to think of it, there isn't much I don't like!

Rustic Flower Pot Bread Loaves

My husband & I run a Chambres D'Hotes, (Bed and Breakfast) called Auberge de la Fontaine here in beautiful South West France; we specialise in Gourmet & Wine Breaks, French Antiques & Restoration courses, French Language courses and French Cookery classes. Our home is completely furnished with Antique French furniture that we have rescued & restored ourselves. Our charming village has one of the oldest Churches in the region & it is famous for its connection with the St.Jacques de Compostella Pilgrimage route, as well as being within the Cognac & Bordeaux wine growing area.

We have a wonderful garden where we grow ALL of our own herbs and most of our fruit and vegetables. I specialise in rare, unusual and old-fashioned herbs, which I grow in our walled garden. As well as growing herbs, I also grow many different varieties of lavender, old-fashioned shrub roses and heirloom fruit and vegetables.

We have lived overseas for many, many years now - but we both still love going home to Northern England, near Scarborough & York, to visit our family & friends. We also love indulging in dining out when we are there, in a wide variety of EXCELLENT Gastro-Pubs that we have in North Yorkshire; and popping in to have a Pint of REAL ENGLISH ALE in our local pub is a always a must!!
