Since it makes great French toast, it’s the bread that’s most often used in diners to make this dish. Any diner I visited in New York City uses it exclusively to make this popular breakfast item. There’s a reason for that too.

Because it’s soft and has a slightly sweet taste, it absorbs the egg custard easily. Also, since it’s an egg-based bread, it will brown gloriously when it’s grilled.

This bread can be used just like any other loaf of bread. It make great regular toast, bread crumbs and sandwiches. If you make Monte Cristo sandwiches, this bread is the perfect choice. I’ve always considered that sandwich a cross between French toast and a ham sandwich. There’s a sweet yet savory factor there and this bread is perfect for that.

Brioche French Toast Recipe

If you’re an artist with yeast breads then braiding this bread will come easy and will be perfect. My mother was such an artist. Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit that skill. I braid, but not very well.

But does that really matter? Think about it. It doesn’t. What you’re going for here is the bread itself and not a work of art. Merely making it as a regular loaf works just as well. So if you’re all thumbs at braiding or shaping, just divide the bread into two pieces and plop each piece in a loaf pan. It works.

French toast comes out best if you work with thick slices of French or Italian loaf bread that are several days old. That way they've had a chance to firm up, which will make the slices hold up better when you dip them in the egg milk mixture and fry them.

Preheat your oven to 170°F, and place a baking sheet in it. Transfer cooked slices of French toast to the baking sheet in a single layer to keep warm as you're cooking additional slices. Do not place the slices on top of each other or they will get soggy.

The classic topping for French toast is butter and maple syrup (or pancake syrup), but feel free to get creative with these toppings. Choose one or mix and match.

Well, is it turning into fall where you are? The only thing “fall” about California in September are the menus at Starbucks. But that doesn’t stop me from getting excited! Fall means good food. I don’t think of a French toast recipe as a fall food, but hey it’s got cinnamon in it, right? Everyone needs this classic recipe, anytime of year. Here we go!!

I’ve never been a French toast lover. There are just so many ways it can go wrong: soggy, undercooked eggy centers, or overcooked, tough-as-a-tire crusts on the edge. Burned edges. To avoid tough edges, use the right bread. Challah, brioche, or a super soft white bread are your best bets. Challah and brioche have much less flour and a higher liquid content than your average loaf of bread, resulting in a super soft, cloud-like texture.

Quick And Easy French Toast {perfect For Brunch!}

The crust on your average loaf of French bread is too tough and chewy. Nobody wants to have to use a knife to cut through the outer of edge of their toast. It should be perfectly fork-able.

The great thing about starting with a loaf of bread is that you can slice it yourself. Most sliced bread is 3/4 of an inch or less. I sliced mine at 1 and 1/4 inch. You could even go up to 2 inches.

There is nothing I hate more than biting into French toast and tasting cooked egg on the edge. No matter how long you beat those eggs, the gloopy whites insist on clumping together. Then when you cook it, the egg on the edge cooks faster than your toast cooks, leaving you with scrambled egg on the edge. Noooooo

Cinnamon Accented French Toast Recipe

The answer is to use only egg yolks. The result is a super rich and creamy mixture. You are basically going to be soaking your bread in creamy custard.

Here’s my “pinch” of nutmeg. You can leave it out if you want. (I just realized it looks weird that there is a glass bowl and a metal bowl here; it’s because I did multiple tests on this recipe. These are photos from two different days.)
