Banana Bread Recipes For Toddlers

Today I'm challenging you to make this easy banana bread recipe for toddlers! Not only does it taste delicious (you'll often find a slice in my own lunch box) but it's a really great recipe for your toddler to make which is why it's the first challenge in our 5 Day Toddler Baking Challenge.

I have found an easy banana bread recipe for toddlers that you will love. My toddlers always enjoy making this and I love that it is a (reasonably) healthy snack for them, and that I can enjoy it with a cup of coffee too! For this recipe you do not need a mixer, your toddler can do all of the steps themselves (with help and supervision of course!).

One of the main reasons I love making banana bread is that my toddlers love eating a few bites of a banana. They never eat the whole thing and I'm always left with a peeled, unwanted banana.

Easy Banana Bread Recipe

I started putting these into zip lock bags (peeled) and freezing them. I then use them when I want to make banana bread, or our favorite strawberry banana smoothies. This tip also works great for overripe bananas that you would normally throw away.

I like to prepare the ingredients before getting the kids in the kitchen but it’s all on your own preference. It also depends on their age and what they’ve already learned in the kitchen. Since I’m working on the cook book and taking photos as I go, I’ve found it easier to prepare along the way. It’s easier for the younger kids to keep their attention going and excited for the next step when you’re prepared.

For this banana bread, I set out all the ingredients so that the little man could add them all in himself. First, he buttered the pan. Then he added the sugar, egg, melted butter and bananas to the bowl. He got to mash all of the bananas in the bowl as they mixed in with the other ingredients.

The little lady decided she wanted to help too so she came to help stir and add in the flour. Instead of making extra large dishes, I added the salt and baking powder together in a small dish. We added the flour straight into the bowl. Some recipes will tell you to combine the flour and baking powder in a separate bowl but I found this to work well. Then you pour the batter into the greased pan and bake for 50 minutes. Grab the full recipe below!

Lower Sugar Banana Bread (so Easy, So Good!)

Banana bread is the perfect way to use up overripe bananas but many versions resemble a dessert recipe rather than a healthy snack. They taste delicious but are definitely not something we want to continually fill out little one's tummies up with.

Even healthy recipes are packed full of honey or maple syrup meaning they still have a high sugar content and in my mind are still regarded as a dessert recipe.

This version is only sweetened with fruit, there are a few dates to help with the sweetness, so I still consider this an occasional treat, but it is noticeably less sweet than most banana bread recipes, even the healthy ones.

The great thing about banana bread is how easy it is to make. It is one of those recipes that doesn't require any fancy ingredients and generally most households have all the ingredient to hand (and are actually looking for a way to use up brown bananas).

Although an easy recipe to follow, there are still a few pitfalls that you'll want to avoid. Below you will find my top tips to ensure you have perfect banana bread every time.

Easy Coconut Flour Banana Bread Recipe

Sweetened only with fruit and made with wholemeal flour, this is a healthy snack rather than a sugary dessert recipe. Perfect for young children.

Dates: I used fresh Medjool dates which blended easily. If your dates are dried then you should soak in boiling water for 10 mins before draining and blending. You can add more or less dates depending on how sweet you want your bread to be. No dates? You can just skip them (if you are not worried about sweetness) or replace the date and milk mixture with ½ cup of maple syrup.

Flour: I used a white wholemeal flour.  I can not guarantee what the results will be like with less processed wholemeal flour as I haven't tested. You can replace with plain (all purpose) flour or do a mixture of wholemeal and all purpose.
