Bread Recipe No Milk Bread Machine

When my niece lived with us, she had the bread maker going every week. I taught her how to bake whole wheat bread from scratch and we converted it to a dairy-free bread machine recipe that was “safe” for her dietary needs. She cut thick slices for breakfast toast and to make sandwiches for her school lunch.

Bread makers might not be as on-trend right now as multi-cookers, but they’re still a staple in many homes. And I know many of you are leaning on them for your daily staple. Which is why I’ve put together this collection of dairy-free bread machine recipes.

Frugal

These recipes are completely free of milk ingredients, and almost all are egg-free and vegan, too. You can also make each loaf nut-free and soy-free, if needed.

Basic White Bread Recipe For Bread Machines (dairy Free!)

This simple dairy-free bread maker recipe is one of the most popular recipes here on Go Dairy Free. It’s a timeless necessity that you can count on, day in and day out.

This recipe is similar to the one my niece baked regularly. Our formula was just a smidgen different, because we often made it 100% whole wheat, but they are equally delicious.

This tender loaf is a great way to use up dairy-free sour cream that didn’t work out, or even dairy-free yogurt. It tastes similar to buttermilk bread, but a little tangier.

Easy Milk Bread Rolls

If you like hearty, then this is your bread machine recipe. It’s made purely with whole spelt flour and infused with seeds.

Susan’s whole grain recipe shuns oil, and it has an option to use up aquafaba (liquid from canned chickpeas) if you have some on hand.

This is the only recipe of the bunch that uses eggs, but I have noted the best egg alternative to make the recipe vegan, if needed.

You can use a dairy-free milk powder or substitute dairy-free milk beverage for the milk powder and water in the recipe. Or just start with this basic white bread recipe for bread machines. It contains just 6 ingredients, and it’s naturally free of dairy.

This basic white bread uses bread flour, which has more gluten than regular all-purpose flour. It helps to give the bread a better texture as it rises and bakes. In a pinch, you can use all-purpose flour, but you might end up with a dense loaf, and the bread won’t be as tender. If you would like to sneak in some whole grains, you can swap 1 cup of the flour with whole wheat flour (but preferably use bread flour for the rest) or enjoy this recipe. Use ivory wheat flour if you don’t want the color to be affected too much. If you opt to use all-purpose flour or a higher ratio of wheat flour, it is best to add 1 to 2 tablespoons of gluten.

Your yeast wasn’t active, your water was too hot or too cold, and/or you substituted different flours for the bread flour. Make sure to pay attention to the first step to ensure the yeast is active. There is more than enough yeast in this recipe! And make sure it wasn’t the opposite problem, that your bread rose too much and collapsed …

Whole Wheat Bread For The Bread Machine Recipe

I’ve made this recipe twice in our 1lb bread maker – first time with just white all purpose flour (all we had!) and the second with half strong white flour and half strong wheat flour and it was fabulous. Thanks for having such a great resource for people with dairy allergies!

This classic recipe was shared with us by a reader back in 2006. For a refresh, we've given the recipe an edit and added some tips in the post above.

Salt Note: For more flavorful bread and a little more structure, you an increase the salt up to 1¼ or 1½ teaspoons. But for everyday, we find 1 teaspoon to be enough.

Adding in Tangzhong, it is guaranteed that your Milk Bread will come out perfect every time. Make sure after you make your Tangzhong it is completely cooled down before adding it into the rest of the ingredients; I recommend making it the night before to help you save time.

Most of us don’t have a stand mixer lying around, and I wanted to make this Milk Bread recipe accessible to everyone so that we will be using our hands throughout the process.
