Easter Bread Recipe With Orange Juice

This traditional Italian Easter bread recipe is an enriched yeast bread, made with eggs, milk, sugar, butter, and flour. The orange almond flavor is subtle but delectable, and the colorful sprinkles on top are perfectly festive for Easter Sunday. Serve this braided almond sweet bread for brunch, a post-lunch treat, or with dinner.

This orange and almond sweet bread definitely requires a few steps to make, but it’s well worth the effort to have this on Easter. It’s easier than it looks and it’s so delicious!

To make the delicious topping for this sweet bread, you’ll need another egg, cold water, sliced almonds, and of course, some colorful sprinkles for a festive finish.

Russian Easter Bread Recipe

Easter bread is made with a yeast dough enriched with ingredients like butter, milk, and eggs, and sweetened with sugar and sometimes other flavors. It’s similar to brioche or challah (egg breads). It’s typically braided, sometimes formed into wreaths, and topped with colorful sprinkles.

Using active dry yeast requires a short proofing process before mixing it in with the rest of the dough. To do this, warm the milk mixture to the right temperature–it must be between 120-130F (any lower and it won’t activate, any higher and it will kill the yeast), so use a thermometer to check. You will then mix the warm milk mixture with the yeast (along with the other ingredients instructed) and beat for 2 minutes.

Separate the bread dough into 3 even sections and roll into long ropes. Place the strips of dough onto a baking tray covered with cooking spray and parchment paper (so it doesn’t stick), and press the 3 pieces together at one end. Grab a piece of dough from the outside and lay it over the middle section. Then grab the other outer section and lay it over the new middle section. Repeat, alternating which side you’re grabbing from, always bringing it over the middle section. Tuck the ends under.

This bread should be baked at 350F, for 40-55 minutes, or until it turns a golden brown color. It should also sound hollow when tapped.

Store leftover Easter bread in an airtight container or resealable bag, and keep it at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Place this egg bread in a freezer-safe container or resealable bag, and freeze for up to 2 months. Let it thaw before serving.

You will be wondering why I am posting Easter bread after Easter. It was to complete this month Daring Baker’s challenge, which was to make Easter bread, suggested by Wolf of wolf’s den. I was planning to make Easter bread for a long time, but never got around to it. Finally I was able to make this beautiful Italian Easter bread-Pane di pasqua.

Braided Easter Bread With Orange And Cardamom

It all started because my daughter’s school also wanted two hard boiled eggs for coloring the eggs. So thought why not I make few colored eggs for my Easter bread too. I boiled 5 eggs to make hard boiled eggs for coloring; unfortunately only two were able to come out in good shape, while others started cracking while in the water. I boiled a few more eggs, to get intact shelled hard boiled eggs. I usually make hard boiled eggs by adding salt to boiling water. How do you make it?

I get good success with this method, occasionally get some cracking. Since I don’t care much about shell it is not a problem. But for coloring the eggs I need some perfect hard boiled eggs. Also my princess wants to color the eggs with her favorite color blue. I made blue, red, green, yellow and green color to make various colored eggs. I used Wilton gel food coloring to make the eggs.

Even though for the Italian Easter bread recipe I don’t need a hard boiled eggs, only they color the raw eggs and eggs gets cooked while baking. I was hesitant to use raw eggs for coloring.

Orange Juice Bread

Boiled eggs in the evening and put it in colored water for overnight in refrigerator and next morning I started to make the bread.

I read that traditional Sicilian Easter bread dough consists of orange zest and anise seed. I always forget to use the orange juice after zesting the orange, so this time I also added orange juice to bread dough. I can’t waste my orange as it is grown in my backyard. This bread has brioche kind of dough and rich with butter and eggs. It is really easy to make dough, just mix flour, butter, sugar, eggs, orange juice, orange zest, yeast, anise seed and milk.

Traditional Italian Easter bread is made as braids with colored eggs pushed it into dough. I made it as individual rings, like I saw here, which doesn’t require pushing it into dough. After first fermentation divide the dough into single ropes and twist them to form braids and set aside for another rise.

Once the dough is raised and ready to bake, place the colored eggs in the center and do the egg wash on the dough and sprinkle with sprinkles. Italian Easter bread is more colorful and summery than the Greek Easter bread. The later consists of red colored eggs which resemble the blood of Jesus. May be next time I will make Greek Easter bread.

Along with this I also tried Norwegian decorative Easter bread, which turned good but decoration was really bad. So my reality was far from the expectation. I will try those too as the bread is so tasty.

The original recipe calls for anise oil and I substituted almond flavoring. Also I halved the recipe because we don't need two big loaves of bread.

The texture of this Italian Easter Bread is fluffy, fairly soft, and tender. It's a barely-sweet bread and the simple, sweet glaze goes perfectly as the finishing touch.

There are sprinkles on top because I think they look Spring-y, but sliced almonds would be nice if you want an alternative.

Easy Easter Brioche Recipe

The orange flavor isn't overpowering, but is definitely there and wonderful. The dough is fairly easy to work with and rises nicely to make this beautiful, big loaf. Just take a look!
