Today I have an extra little bonus recipe here for you so you have a project in the kitchen this weekend. It’s a fun one too. And a delicious one!

I shared a naan bread a million years ago but this garlic butter version is TOPS. It is the ultimate comfort food.

In the craziest turn of events, I can’t find ANY yeast in my grocery stores right now. I mean, are people really baking that much bread? If so, that’s wonderful. But the bread aisles are practically empty too!

Ingredient Dough Naan (no Yeast!)

So anyway – this naan bread doesn’t use yeast – it uses baking powder and soda. I’ve made versions with both yeast and baking powder and I really love both. You’re still going to let this one rise for a while, so don’t get TOO excited. It only helps with the flavor. 

You’re also going to use yogurt! I’ve used both plain regular yogurt and plain greek yogurt with success. If you don’t have plain yogurt right now, you can use all milk. But if you have the yogurt, go for it. 

The dough rises, you form it into balls, roll it out and cook it on a cast iron skillet. It gets all charred and delicious!

Garlic Naan Recipe

Melt some butter in a saucepan and stir in minced garlic cloves. Brush it directly on the hot naan bread. Sprinkle on some fresh parsley and you are in business!

While I have always loved naan, Eddie is absolutely fanatical over it. Probably loves it more than I do! If I don’t make it, he buys a package every week (which isn’t anywhere near as good as homemade). We often use it for these smoky chicken pitas (instead of the pita!) and we make quick pizzas on naan too.

This garlic butter naan bread recipe is divine! It uses baking powder and baking soda instead of yeast and is drenched with garlic butter. So delicious!

👩‍🍳PRO TIP Keep the naan breads warm in the oven on a very low heat. Place the naans on a tray and place them on top of each other in a stack (this helps them not to dry out) in the oven, covered in foil.

Once the naan breads are ready, generously brush them with garlic butter. This is a mixture of melted unsalted butter, minced garlic, salt and dried parsley.

Fresh, active or instant yeast can all be added to warm water to check if it's active - so I see it as a 'one-size-fits-all' instruction.

I've included some information in the notes section of the recipe card regarding yeast amounts if you want to use active or fresh yeast instead of instant.

Yes, make the naan breads, then cool them and place in an airtight container or wrapped in foil. They should be fine at room temperature for 2 days.

Reheat them by placing on a baking tray in a single layer, covered in foil. Place in a pre-heated oven at 200C/400F for about 5-6 minutes until hot throughout.

You can make them ahead, including brushing on the garlic butter, or you can make them without the garlic butter and brush the garlic butter on after reheating. It's up to you. They will be more buttery if you brush the garlic butter on right before serving, but they taste great either way.

Replace the 2 tsp (7g) instant yeast with 2.5 tsp (9g) active dry yeast. OR Replace the 2 tsp (7g) instant yeast with 2tbsp (18g) of fresh yeast.

Easy Homemade Naan Bread (no Yeast, 2 Ingredients)

For plain or cumin naans: Instead of brushing with garlic butter, brush with melted salted butter and sprinkle on nigella seeds or cumin seeds.

You can halve the recipe to make 3 naans or 4 small naans by halving all of the ingredients (same kneading and proving time needed).

Crave It All here sharing our recipe for garlic naan bread; a favorite spin on a traditional flat bread from India. Normally baked inside hot Tandoor ovens with charcoal or wood fire, our naan bread recipe has been altered to cook them right on the stove in a hot cast-iron skillet.

Easy Naan Bread Recipe (yeast Free)

We use a combination of yogurt and oil to give them an addictive soft and fluffy texture, and add minced garlic right into the dough to give us a perfect garlicky flavor.

Both flatbreads are made with a yeast raised dough, however Pita bread has a harder texture when compared to Naan. While pita bread only contains flour, water, yeast, salt and some olive oil; naan is made with a fattier, more enriched dough including ghee (clarified butter), oil, yogurt and sometimes eggs. This gives naan its different texture.

Serve with Tikka Masala or Butter Chicken, or use them to make wraps. Substitute garlic naan breads for tortillas for quesadillas, or for simple naan pizzas!

If you plan on storing your naan breads, do not brush them with the garlic butter. When cooked, let cool completely to room temperature to prevent condensation. Transfer to ziplock bags and store at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 4 days.

When ready to eat, heat them up on a pan over low-medium heat, or in the microwave for 10 seconds. Brush with garlic butter and enjoy!
