This recipe comes together with just a short list of readily available ingredients. You might be surprised because of how flavorful it is, but the dough only has four ingredients plus water.

French Bread has longer and thinner shape than regular bread. It’s characterized by a golden brown crust with the perfect crust. French Bread is generally heartier, yet softer in texture on the inside; French bread is often served alongside soups and salads.

If your crust isn’t turning out as golden as hoped for, you can try first to adjust the placement of your oven rack. Move it up or down to adjust the distance to the heating element. If that doesn’t work, you can also try turning up the oven by 25 degrees, although you’ll have to watch to ensure it’s not over-baked. Be sure not to skip the egg wash, as it’s essential for a perfectly golden top.

Yes, you can use instant yeast for bread. This recipe calls for active dry yeast, but if you only have instant yeast on hand, that will work too. Use the same amount of instant yeast as you would active dry yeast. If using instant yeast, note that the dough may double in size a lot sooner, so you may need to adjust the rise time.

You can definitely half this recipe if you only need one delicious loaf of French Bread instead of two. Split the recipe evenly in half and follow the same directions before enjoying the scrumptious result.

The only downside to fresh, homemade bread is that it can take a bit of time. Proofing, rising, rolling, rising etc. Today’s recipe is a quick and easy one. It may not be quite as quick as the 30 Minute Roll recipe I have on my blog, but it is pretty close. And the results are two delicious loaves of French bread that arecrusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

The steam that is given off from the water helps the loaf get that nice crust that a good loaf of easy French bread needs.

Traditional (real Deal) French Bread Recipe

After forming the loaves, let them rise, covered on the baking sheet for 15-20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Brush top of bread with egg wash or olive oil (you won’t get as golden a color with olive oil), sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

It freezes great, just be sure to cool it completely and wrap up air tight. It will keep in the freezer for 1-2 months.

Rapid rise yeast will work fine. I use the same amount as I do of active dry yeast. Just add the rapid rise yeast directly in with the flour, no need to add it to the warm water first.

If you want to use whole wheat flour, I recommend using half whole wheat and half white flour. I always use a white whole wheat flour.

If you want to skip the pan full of water in the oven.  Preheat your oven to a 375 degree F. oven.  Allow the bread to rise for 15-20 minutes after forming into loaves.  Then place in the oven and bake for  20-25 minutes or until golden brown and baked through.

It’s also incredibly simple and easy to make at home using just a handful of ingredients that most bakers will already have on hand. It really doesn’t take much time either. Yes, it’s nearly 3 hours from start to finish, but your actual hands on time is quite minimal. A few minutes here, a few minutes there, and you have deliciously perfect homemade french bread at home.

If you don’t have a French bread pan, you can always use a regular baking sheet. Just be sure to give your loaves enough space in between them so that they don’t end up connected.

Baguette (the Easiest Recipe)

If you come to love homemade french bread, I highly recommend investing in a french bread pan. It is perforated (has a lot of holes) which allows for even heat circulation. This ensures the best, highest quality of loaf at home. I highly recommend purchasing one. They are cheap and make a world of difference in the end result.

Both all-purpose and bread flour can be used in this recipe interchangeably. Bread flour has a higher protein content which will produce more gluten, giving you a slightly chewier crumb and crust.

We know how frustrating it can be to follow a recipe and still have it not look like it is supposed to. With bread, you want to look at any recipe simply as a guide. Altitude, humidity, and temperature, among other things, can all impact homemade bread. Because of this, you always want to go off of the feel of the dough rather than following the recipe exactly. If your dough is at the perfect consistency and you haven’t used all of the flour, don’t worry about it. If you’ve added all of the flour required and your dough is too sticky, go ahead and add more until it is the right consistency. You will get a good idea of what your bread needs the more you make it!

This bread loaf requires you to cut slits into the top of the bread before baking. This process is called “scoring the bread.” As bread bakes, it expands and scoring helps release some of that pressure so that the bread can expand without awkward bulges.
