Easy Monkey Bread Recipe With 1 Can Of Biscuits

There is something about saturday mornings that make them so inherently different than the weekday hustle and bustle. maybe it’s because there’s no set schedule, maybe it’s because we don’t have to go in to work, or maybe it’s because my kids – after being so busy and active during the week – take the opportunity to sleep in instead of waking up at 5am. regardless of what it is that makes them feel different, there is definitely a much more relaxed mood at our house. so i love to leisurely make a special saturday morning breakfast to kick-start our weekend. usually it’s pancakes, cinnamon rolls, or sausage and red pepper scrambled eggs, but this past weekend, it was monkey bread.

I have a super easy overnight monkey bread recipe that is super popular here on the blog. and when i’m on top of things and think ahead the overnight version is a great one to make. but sometimes just the thought of a saturday morning makes me lazy and i don’t take the 5 minutes it takes to put it together the night before. fortunately for people like me, there’s this super easy version that takes maybe 5 -10 minutes to put together, 1/2 hour or so to bake in the oven, and then no time at all for it to be devoured. and you make it all from start to finish in the morning. all you need are these 5 simple ingredients:

And to put it together, all you need to do it cut the biscuits into quarters (slice one way, then the other!), and then roll them around in cinnamon-sugar until they are totally covered (my kids LOVE to help with this part!)…

…and then put them in a greased bundt pan. (aff link – but i totally love this one…i’ve been using it for years, and i’ve even forgotten to spray the pan on occasion and it totally didn’t matter!)

It’s smelling great already! now to make it all ooey and gooey and totally mouth-watering, just melt the butter and brown sugar together and drizzle it over the top, like so:

All that syrup is going to get into the nooks and crannies and bake into the dough to make this one delicious breakfast treat!

I had to hurry and take this picture before it got devoured by some bed-headed, sleepy-eyed kids of mine. the little pieces of the biscuits covered in the butter and brown sugar mixture and the cinnamon-sugar are the perfect size for little hands to pull off and enjoy. and if for some crazy reason it doesn’t totally get gobbled up, it’s great to have out on the counter for a little sweet bite here and there throughout the morning. Our Monkey Bread Recipe is a classic breakfast treat that the kids (and adults!) absolutely go nuts over! Sweet, sticky biscuits coated in cinnamon and sugar and baked in a simple caramel sauce.

I’m not sure about the rest of the world though. I don’t believe canned biscuit dough is a hugely popular thing outside of the US, and that is the standard start to a quick monkey bread.

Of course, this is about the only time I use canned biscuits, because my dad’s homemade biscuits are life-changing! I get comments and emails from readers almost daily about how that biscuit recipe is THE ONE TRUE BISCUIT. đŸ˜‰

Ingredient Caramel Monkey Bread

Anyway, this monkey bread with biscuits is a classic. We grew up on it and I wanted to share the recipe because 1) it’s good stuff, 2) every kid needs this in their life, and 3) it’s a holiday breakfast staple and there’s always another holiday around the corner.

Also known as cinnamon pull apart bread, this popular treat is basically just cinnamon sugar covered biscuit dough baked in a simple caramel sauce.

It’s usually made in a Bundt pan and it gets the name “monkey bread” from the way you pull it apart with your hands like a monkey would. Or maybe you use a fork like a civilized person. That’s okay too.

A quality bundt pan is essential! This one is non-stick, budget friendly, and gets used often in my home. It’s the classic choice for monkey bread recipes!

We pop it on a serving platter or cake stand, have everyone wash their hands (important step for what’s to come next…), and then everyone picks apart the bread like little monkeys, pulling off bits of sweet, sticky dough and popping them onto their plate or into their mouths.

Although monkey bread is traditionally made in a Bundt pan you can use a variety of other pans to make it. Cake pans, cast iron skillets, baking dishes, etc. Just make sure to adjust the quantity for the size.

Skillet Monkey Bread

It gets the name because of how you pick it apart with your hands to eat it like a monkey would. It is also known as plucking cake, pull-apart bread, or bubble bread!

Easy

You can leave the monkey bread covered at room temperature for at least a couple of days. No need to refrigerate. You can re-heat the bread in portions in the microwave for about 20 seconds. Monkey bread is best enjoyed warm!

If you want to attempt, double a batch of my dad’s biscuits and pat the dough out into a large rectangle and then just cut into 1-inch squares. I would be a bit more liberal with the flour so that the dough is a bit sturdier and not quite as soft.

Test the size of your bundt pan, by measuring water and pouring it into the pan. A 9 cup bundt pan will hold 9 cups of water. A larger bundt pan will also work fine, but do not use a smaller pan with this recipe.

We like to put our pan on a baking sheet before placing in the oven, just in case the caramel leaks over the edges. It’s much easier to clean the baking sheet than the oven.

Quick Monkey Bread From Scratch

Although there are endless variations, monkey bread is basically bite-sized pieces of dough baked with other ingredients that tie all the flavors together. The most common variation is exactly what you see here, made with butter, sugar, and cinnamon.

It is believed that monkey bread got its name because it is eaten by people picking off pieces and putting them straight into their mouths. Much like you would picture how a monkey eats!

This is one of my most popular recipes and has been viewed more than3 Milliontimes! Homemade monkey bread has similar flavors to cinnamon rolls but is much easier to make. Here are just a few reasons why everyone loves this recipe.

One Hour Homemade Monkey Bread

We always looked forward to Granny making this monkey bread every summer when we had an extended family vacation. It was a highlight for everyone!

This recipe can be prepared the night before so you can easily pop it in the oven in the morning. It’s an easy recipe that even the most novice bakers can master.

The heart of monkey bread lies in its dough. Using refrigerated biscuit dough, you’ll create small balls of dough that will transform into heavenly bites of goodness.

Not only does using canned biscuit dough make this recipe super quick and easy to make, but the butter in the dough melts during the baking process.

Combine the white sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl or plastic bag. Drop each of the dough piecesin the sugar-cinnamon mixture and shake it around to coat. Gently arrange the cinnamon-sugar biscuit pieces into a greased pan.

In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar and butter. Add 1/2 cup of the remaining sugar-cinnamon mixture to the butter mixture (you can discard the remaining sugar mixture or use it for another recipe).

Gently heat the mixture to melt the butter and bring it just to a boil. Then, immediately remove it from heat. Stir the mixture until the sugars have fully dissolved. Do not overcook the syrup; you simply want to help the sugar dissolve.

Arrange the pan in the center of the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes. The cooking time may vary depending on the oven and the type of pan used.

Once you take the monkey bread out of the oven, allow the pan to rest for about 5 minutes, then cover it with a large servingplate and invert.

To be entirely sure that the monkey bread is fully cooked and not doughy in the center, use a thermometer to verify that the middle has reached 190°F.

If the top is browning too much and the center is still not at 190°F, lower the monkey bread
